THE NATIONAL CONVENTION
The national convention was elected to have power over France and turn the country into a republic. Robespierre was a powerful member of the National Convention. The Convention declared a French Republic in September 1792. After the declaration, Robespierre pushed for a trial and execution of King Louis XVI, while other members pushed for more moderation. After it was discovered that the king wrote letters to foreign governments to get help in preserving the monarchy, which was against the laws of the Convention, Robespierre convinced the Convention to have a trial for the King and Queen Marie Antoinette. The King and Queen were convicted and executed.
MAKING ENEMIES
On July 27, 1793, Robespierre became part of the Committee of Public Safety, which had first been set up in April. While some of the other members were away on missions and others were preoccupied with special assignments, he tried to solve racism among revolutionaries by relying on the Jacobin societies and the other committees. The Committee had absolute power and Robespierre instituted the Reign of Terror in September 1793 to maintain control of the government and purge it of corruption.
